Allright Family Band, formed in 1976 out of Venice & Malibu, California, came to Maui in 1977, & released their “Music Is Love, Maui” album in 1980 (Tracks 1-8), mastered at George Benson's music studio there. 

The band performed with many mainland and Maui musicians, including the great superstar Bob Marley, although they are not exclusively a reggae band.  Their music is classic rock, for sure. 

 

 

After many years in the music business, Bill “Buck” Rodgers formed the band, serving as lead vocalist while playing keyboards and trombone. He wrote the first eight songs in collaboration with Bruce Bandura, lead guitarist and vocalist; David Gage and Alan Miranda on bass; Kimon Kotos on drums; and Donnie Numark on harmonica. The country-rock song “Cadillac” (Track 5) became a favorite radio airplay tune.

 

Managed by the late, great Robert “Bumps” Blackwell—known for discovering Jimi Hendrix and Little Richard—The Allright Family Band decided to remain on beautiful Maui, where they recorded the album at George Benson’s studio in Lahaina.

 

Sky Saxon of The Seeds co-wrote and sang on the fantastic rock song “Starry Ride” (Track 4). Steve Wasserman of The Doobie Brothers played saxophone, while Andy Sexton of Simplisity appears on sax on “Starry Ride Tribute” (Track 11). The young Hawaiian guitarist and vocalist Henry Kapono, now a superstar, performed on “Help Yourself.” Slick Aguilar, guitarist for Jefferson Starship, contributed a cool solo to “Know That I Love You,” and Pete Hernandez, father of Bruno Mars, kept the beat on congas. Featured female vocalists include Naomi Summers, Stephanie Moore Rodgers, and Marilyn Rodgers.

 

In 2006, Rodgers’ two sons became known as “Buck’s Boys” and later formed the band Breath of Fire. Jai Rodgers and Daniel Rodgers wrote the bonus track “Simmer Down” (Track 12). Today, Jai writes and performs with Jai & the Tones, while Daniel appears on the bonus track “Another Day” (Track 13). The track features superstar performer BET (Big Every Time), who adds a rap to “Sound So.”

 

Bill “Buck” Rodgers now hosts “Star Tracks,” a weekly TV series airing every Tuesday at 12:30 p.m. on Œlelo Channel 53. The show spotlights musicians from across the islands. You can also find “Buck Rodgers Star Tracks” on YouTube.
